Night Shyamalan’s fifth feature Signs was another of his intricately observed and intelligently acted thrillers and turns ten years old this year. Touching on themes of loss, family and faith while at the same time ratcheting up the tension, Shyamalan creates a smart and adult entertainment. After the death of his wife in a car accident, Graham Hess lost his faith and left the church. Now living on their family farm with his two young children and former minor league baseball player brother, they live a simple life. That is until a massive crop circle is found outside their home and they begin to see figures lurking in the shadows. Centered on one of Mel Gibson’s most sensitive performances and with a highly underrated turn by Joaquin Phoenix, the film builds layers of dread and meaning as Graham becomes more and more obsessed with the portents of an alien invasion. The film develops in classic Shyamalan style as twists and surprises await culminating in one of the most terrifying moments in recent film history and building to a shocking conclusion.
