Decades ago con man Val (Pacino) took the fall for his best friend and fellow crook Doc (Walken), protecting his identity even though it meant a long prison term. Now released from jail and a free man he’s taken in by his friend and wants to get back to his life. The only problem is that their mob-boss Mr. Claphands has ordered Doc to kill Val for a long held grudge – or else Claphands will kill Doc instead. Without Val’s knowledge, Doc buys his friend a one night reprieve, delaying his ghastly duty until morning, and the two men find their oldest friend Hirsch (Arkin) and set out for a night of mayhem. Running through every vice in the book (bullets, robbery, drugs and sex just for starters) they are determined to make up for lost time, but as the minutes tick past, Doc begins to realize that he has a terrifying appointment at dawn. Director Fisher Stevens (a beloved character actor in his own right) keeps things moving at a fast pace and balances the film between the silly and the serious. Like a oddball cross between Goodfellas and The Bucket List, Stand Up Guys is both a different kind of aging story and a new twist on the gangster genre. With echoes of many of their classic films of the last five decades, this cast legendary actors all deliver funny and warm late career performances as the characters reflect on their friendship and days of glory passed in this wonderful new crowd pleaser.
